rectangular with cut corners, the cover, sides and base enamelled in tranlucent blue on an engine-turned ground, the cover centred with an oval enamel plaque depicting Venus and Cupid in a landscape, the base centred with an oval blue enamel reserve on an engine-turned ground with sunburst pattern and eight-leaf flowerhead, slightly raised silver thumbpiece

The miniature is copied after a print from Angelica Kauffmann's oil painting Sappho inspired by Love, a version of which is in The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota.
