A COPTIC TEXTILE PANEL
Circa 5th-6th Century A.D.
The square polychrome panel likely from a tunic, in dark purple, yellow, green and red, with scrolling vines forming five roundels, the central one with a centaur galloping to the right and looking back over his shoulder, his right arm extended over his back, carrying a branch his left hand, the top left and bottom right roundels each with a winged and reined hippocamp, the top right and bottom left roundels each with a running figure, nude but for a mantle draped over the shoulder, with an object held in a raised hand, another object tucked beneath the arm, a basket filled with fruit and berry leaves between the roundels, the panel now attached to a fringed cloth
