The bombé form and carved giltwood apron of this commode relates to the oeuvre of the Danish cabinet-maker Mathias Ortmann (d. 1757). Two similar commodes are illustrated in H. Kreisel, G. Himmelheber, et. al., Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1979, vol. II, figs. 852 and 853.
A further closely related example with identical rockwork and cabochon handles was sold anonymously at Sotheby's New York, 2 October 1993, lot 235.
