The white enamel Roman chapter disc within a foliate-cast gilt glazed bezzel with blued steel hands, pendulum regulation square at XII, the twin fusee movement with anchor escapement and silk-suspended pendulum, quarter-chiming on two bells, the drum head case surmounted by an ormolu berried-vine mount flanked by two biscuit porcelain figures of a cupid and bacchic youth, the porcelain frieze panels painted with rosettes and scrolling foliage en grisaille within foliate-cast ormolu borders, the central plaque signed Manufacture de M. Le Duc, D'Angouleme à Paris, the D-ended plinth on eight ormolu toupie feet

Lot Essay

The D'Angouleme porcelain factory was established by the partners Guehard and Dihl in 1789 under the protection of the duc d'Angoulème. Recorded in rue Bondy (or rue de Temple) they specialized in the production of extremely fine quality biscuit and hard paste porcelain aswell as jasper plaques imitating the Wedgwood factory. They were extensively patronised by the Garde Meuble supplying Biscuit figures and objects ranging in value from 60 to 1200 francs and clock cases from 200 to 6000 francs
