The design of the back of this hall bench is clearly inspired by the designs of Daniel Marot. The strongly symetric design is centred by a bold urn, flanked to either side by a bold strapwork S-scroll issuing acanthus leaf. This scheme can be seen in Marot's designs for the headboards of beds, which also consist of a strong scrolling strapwork frame centering on a female mask or vase.
A similar bench is illustrated in K. Sluyterman Huisraad en Binnenhuis in Nederland in vroeger eeuwen, the Hague 1947, p. 279, cat. no. 360. This bench also has scaled strapwork scrolls in the back, serpents intertwining in the sides and a drapery apron.
