The towns of Loenen and Nieuwersluis are two villages on the river Vecht in Utrecht province where many wealthy 17th century Amsterdam merchants had their summer homes.
Leendert Beekhuis was born in Amsterdam in 1708 and specialised in engraved tobacco boxes. Two other examples by him are illustrated in J. W. Frederiks, Dutch silver, vol. II, page 105. Another example, depicting the levy of taxes, was sold Sotheby's Amsterdam, 3 November 2003, lot 70.
