This chair is an example of the Dutch rococo in its most flamboyant form.
A comparable chair from the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Cologne, is illustrated in Reinier Baarsen, Rococo in Nederland, Zwolle, 2001, pp.189-190, no. 102.
While the Cologne armchair is based more closely on an English type, with waved seat-rail and H-shaped stretcher, the present example is much more influenced by the French rococo style, and was probably executed a few years later. In fact, the heavy construction of the rails of the chair, and the legs carved in low relief, relate to chairs made in the period 1750 - 1760. Reinier Baarsen, Rococo op.cit. nos. 165, 166 and 167.
