The arms are those of Francisco Antnio da Veiga Cabral da Cmara Pimentel (1734-1810), 1st Viscount de Mirandella, who became Governor of Portuguese India and Military Governor of Brazil. The Grand Cross of the Order of Aviz is suspended from the garland encircling the arms. For a discussion on these arms and the family, see Conde de Castro e Solla, Ceramica Brazonada, pp.8-11, and pl.VI for a plate from the Campos e Sousa collection. A similar but slightly larger dish from the Mottahedeh Collection is illustrated by D. Howard and J. Ayers, China for the West, 1978, vol.II, no.378; another from the Jorge Getulio Veiga Collection is illustrated by N. de Castro, Chinese Porcelain and the Heraldry of the Empire, 1988, p.177. This was sold, together with a plate from this service, in the Veiga sale, Sotheby's London, 31 October 1989, lots 148 and 154. Another dish of this size was sold in our New York Rooms, 21 January 1999, lot 27.
