This is part of a service made in circa 1775 for Colonel James Morgan (1740-1808), who served with the East India Company in India. He married in 1774 Mary, eldest daughter of The Rev. Joseph Wharton, Headmaster of Winchester College. See D.S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, p.634. It would appear the present example was made at a slightly later date, with small design differences, such as the addition of the ostrich plume crest, possibly as a supplementary service or as a replacement. Other pieces from this later service are also known.
