A fan, the leaf painted with a central Venus leaning against her chariot and with a pair of doves hovering alongside instructing Cupid to pierce a lady with an arrow, another lady looking on and two men passing by, possibly relating the story of Dido and Aeneas, with serpentine ivory sticks, the guards carved with figures, shells and sea serpents--10½in. (26.5cm.), circa 1720s, in double-sided fan-shaped case; and another fan, of ivory gauze, spangled and with painted vignettes, the ivory sticks carved, pierced, gilt and clouté --10½in.
