A fine example of fully developed New York Federal seating, this chair, with its elaborately carved shield, delicate outflaring front legs and inward tapering rear legs, demonstrates its maker's familiarity with Hepplewhite's design plates.
An unusual feature found primarily on tables and case forms, yet extraordinary to this chair, are the inlaid overlapping husks. For a similar chair see Flanigan, American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection (New York, 1986), pp. 116-117.
