THE TAFT-ALDEN DOLLS FROM PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND
These two dolls (lot 48 and 49) are from the Taft-Alden family and were probably bought for Mary Elizabeth Taft, born 1858 and her sister. Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of Governor Royal Chapin Taft, a prominent citizen and businessman from Providence Rhode Island who became a republican after the dissolution of the Whig party. Mary Elizabeth married George Mathewson Smith, a great, great, great, great, great, great grandson of John Alden and Priscilla Mullen from the Mayflower. Both dolls were treasured and cared for by George and Mary Elizabeth's daughter Hope, a respected artist of Providence who was born in 1879 and died in 1965. They have remained in the original family until now. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (b.1807 d.1882), wrote a poem 'The Courtship of Miles Stanish' in which John Aldin and Priscilla Mullen are mentioned.
