Lot Essay

An interesting point of note is the purity of the material chosen to produce the present ruyi; its subtle, abstract design further accentuates the natural even white tone of the material. Compare with a similar ruyi carved with birds and flowers on the head and the handle left plain, sold in these Rooms, The Imperial Sale, 30 April 2000, lot 573.
