Lot Essay

The present figure is closely comparable, in the treatment of the drapery, to a bozzetto by Riemenschneider in the Mainfrnkisches Museum, Wrtzburg (illustrated in Apollo Magazine, September 1969, p. cxc). It is therefore possible that this fragment represents a rare survival of a Corpus figure from Riemenschneider's early years and that, having been damaged during the Farmer's War of 1525, it was used as a roof support at the church in Miltenberg, until its re-discovery in 1950.
