For a scent-bottle set with a similar portrait of the Doge, see L.H. Selman Ltd, 27 February 1998, lot 303. The partial plaque in the present bottle likely refers to IX Congresso Degli Scienziati in Venezia 1847. Pietro Bigaglia is recorded producing a number of portraits and a commemorative complex black and white cane plaque for this seminal event.
