In Greek legend, when Iasus desired that his daughter Atalanta should marry, she specified that every suitor should contend with her in a foot race; she would wed the first man who outstripped her, but unsuccessful competitors would be put to death. She was eventually defeated by Meilanion a favourite of Aphrodite, his patroness having given him three of the Golden Apples of the Hesperides as an aid. He dropped them one by one during the race and each time Atalanta stopped to pick them up. She accordingly married him. The couple later incurred the wrath of Cybele, through the fickle Aphrodite, and were turned into lions.
