    Lot Essay

Having studied under Jouffroy, Falguière and Delaplanche at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, Raoul Larche (d.1912) began his career as an allegorical sculptor but soon became a Symbolist and, in his later years, a protagonist of the Art Nouveau movement. A strong Symbolist work, produced early on in his career and representing the ideal of the victor in life honouring the loser, Even the Conquerors must mourn their Victories shows a youthful warrior standing and contemplating his vanquished enemies.
