Lot Essay

The ultimate design source for the base to this table can be traced to an antiquity unearthed in Naples, though during the Neoclassic period they were internationally admired and copied. For example, a drawing by Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) of furniture proposed for the Neuen Pavillion at Charlottenburg illustrates a remarkably similar table (see Karl Friedrich Schinkel: 1781-1841, exhib. cat. Staatliche Museen, Berlin, 23 October 1980 - 29 March 1981, p. 226-227, cat. no. 351).
