The rectilinear back, clearly influenced by Chinese chairs of the 16th Century, also appears on the dining-chairs at Newhailes, East Lothian, a Scottish house which retains much of its original early 18th Century furnishings. Some of the Newhailes chairs are illustrated in Country Life (P. Duncan, 'Newhailes, East Lothian - I', Country Life, 29 January 1987, pp. 87 and 89, figs. 6 and 10 and 'The Bended Back Chair', Exhibition Catalogue, London, 13-29 June 1990, no. 14).
This sofa still retains its original canvas webbing.
