The landscape painting with its flourishing rural scene is displayed above an early 18th century 'landscape' glass, and a rustic pavilion surmounts its serpentined frame. Patterns for related 'Chimney Glasses and Pictures Frames' in the George II 'picturesque' manner featured in Matthias Lock's New Book of Ornaments, 1752; Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director, 1754-1762, and Messrs. Ince & Mayhew's The Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762 (pl. LXXXIV).
The overmantel may have been amongst the furnishings introduced by William Hucks of Clifton Hampden and Aldenham, whose daughter and heiress married Anthony Gibbs (b. 1756).
