THE AYKROYD COLLECTION
The following seventeen lots are part of the collection formed by Colonel and Mrs Harold Aykroyd, which comprises superb quality mahogany and walnut furniture reflecting the taste of English post-war collectors. The photographs of Whixley Hall, North Yorkshire, reproduced here, show the interiors circa 1950, during the time of the Aykroyds' ownership. Over the years many purchases were made from dealers in London and Yorkshire, with some of the best pieces being purchased from the renowned Harrogate dealer, Charles Lumb.
Part of the collection was offered in the sale of English and Continental Furniture on 27 April 2006 with the remainder included in this sale. The highlight of the collection is the George II walnut, mahogany and parcel-gilt dressing bureau-on-stand, formerly in the collection of Percival Griffiths, F.S.A., and purchased by R. W. Symonds, the renowned furniture historian, at Griffiths' sale at Christie's in May 1939.
Mrs Aykroyd left Whixley Hall following the death of her husband in 1974.
