Lot Essay

The Chinese-railed tea-table, with ribbon-fretted 'tray' gallery, has its columnar legs fretted with 'Chinese' palm lambrequins and terminating in 'round' toes as featured on a 1760 table pattern in the Estimate Sketch Books of Gillows of Lancaster (L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 3).
Designs for similarly railed 'China Tables' were published in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754 (pl. 34).
