Lot Essay

This marble-topped and richly carved 'Roman' fashioned sideboard-table has its frame enwreathed by darts in an echinous moulding; while the goddess of the chase or hunt is honoured by Diana's head displayed in a picturesque scrolled lambrequin cartouche and Jupiters eagle claws emerged from the Roman acanthus on its trussed or sarcophagus-scrolled columnar legs. Its ornament features in table patterns issued in William Jones, The Gentleman or Builder's Companion, 1739 (pls. 27 and 28).
