This chair with its veil-drapery festooned over medallions relates to a suite supplied in the 1780s for Holkham Hall, Norfolk as part of the furnishings carried out under the direction of the architect Samuel Wyatt (d.1807) (see H.A.Tipping, English Homes, period V, vol.I, 1921, p.314, fig.380). The Wyatt family of architects enjoyed a close working relationship with Messrs. Gillow, cabinet-makers of London and Lancaster, and a chair design of circa 1785-90 in the firm's archives also features an upholstered panel framed within the chair back (see L.Boynton, ed., Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, 1995, pl.266).
A set of six chairs of virtually the same design was sold Sotheby's London, 17 June 1983, lot 74. Another pair from the Estate of Mrs. Grace M. Gooderham, was sold in these Rooms, 17 October 1997, lot 232. The Haynes chair features the addional embellishment of the drapery swag which does not appear in the Gillows design or in the examples noted above.
