The elliptic table-top has a frame elegantly serpentined in harmony with the 1770s French 'cabriolet' drawing-room chairs featured in T. Malton's Compleat Treatise on Perspective, 1775 (pl.33, fig. 131). The 'Venus' shell motif of its Roman-medallion inlay reflects the antique style popularised by G.B.Pirensi's Diverse Maniere d'adornare I cammini, Rome, 1769; and can be seen, for instance, on Thomas Chippendale's card-tables of the 1770s at Newby Hall, Yorkshire; and in a 1788 pier-table sketch in the Estimate Sketch Books of Gillow of London and Lancaster (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, fig. 408; and L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs , Royston, 1995, fig. 13). A related reed-banded frame, enriched with foliate trophies, appeared on a giltwood side table almost certainly executed in the same workshop, sold by Hotspur to Sylvia Adams in 1974 (sold from the Adams Collection, Bonhams, 8 May 1996, lot 360).
