Lot Essay

The elegant simplicity and design of this press-cupboard is similar in form to a 'Clothes Press' supplied by Chippendale to Ninian Home at Paxton House, Berwickshire in 1774, illustrated in A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, fig.276. The use of finely chosen timbers and the cut-cornered paneled doors are conforming with much of the furniture supplied by Chippendale to Paxton and also to houses such as Nostell Priory and Aske Hall, Yorkshire, as well as Mersham-le-Hatch, Kent.
