A George III ormolu and paste-set musical quarter chiming table for the Chinese market
Unsigned. Circa 1780
The ormolu case with urn finials flanking the domed top with segmented geometric roundel decoration, surmounted by a large urn finial, similar decoration to the sides of the case, the rear door set with a cast floral trellis sound fret, the concave-moulded base on outswept palmette feet, the front set with vivid multi-coloured paste stones with red and green bagette-style stones set around the white enamel dial with Roman chapters, gold hour and minute hands and blued steel sweep centre seconds, the movement with triple fusees wound at the backplate in the Chinese market style, the going train with knife-edge verge escapement, the strike train giving ting-tang quarter strike and the hour on two bells, the musical train playing one of two tunes SONG/DANCE on the hour via eight bells and eight hammers with engraved brass music selection disc at the base of the backplate engraved with flowers around a central oval engraved with a basket of summer flowers
