Lot Essay

The medallion form of the chair back, with fretted splats radiating from a pattera, relates to those of chairs supplied in 1774 by Thomas Chippendale (d.1779) for Paxton House, Berwickshire, (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, fig. 164). A related 'Catherine Wheel' pattern features in the late 1780s Estimate Sketch Books of Gillows of London and Lancaster (L. Boynton, (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 269).
