Lot Essay

This type of pedestal for candelabrum, flower-vase or bust was described as a 'term' in Hepplewhite's Guide of 1788. The garlanded vestal figure in the centre presumably derives from a printed source; it also appears on a Wedgwood jasper vase illustrated in R. Reilly, Wedgwood, London, 1989, vol. I, fig. 1001.
