The trestles, with Grecian palm-flowered trusses, have reed-gadrooned pillars with swell bases after a pattern featured in T. King, The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1829 (see E. Joy, Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1977, p. 491).
A related writing-table by Gillows of Lancaster, supplied to William, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (d. 1833), was sold in the Wentworth sale, in these Rooms, 8 July 1998, lot 83. Two further variants of this pattern appear in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books for 24 September 1824, no. 3371, and 10 October 1828, no. 3684.
