The arms are those of Sir Jacob Astley, 6th Baronet (1797-1859), who married Georgiana Caroline, 2nd daughter of Sir Henry Watkin Dashwood, in 1819. In 1841, he was created 16th Baron Hastings.
This meat platter and cover is part of a large dinner service created for Sir Jacob Astley by Edward Farrell. The majority of it, comprising more than 5000 ounces, sold at Christie's from the collection of The Rt. Hon. The Lord Hastings in 1959. A meat platter and cover from the service is illustrated in Michael Clayton, The Collector's Dictionary of Silver & Gold of Great Britain and North America, 2nd ed., 1985, no. 241, p. 156.
