The German Connection
A most interesting aspect of the collecting of Britains early toys and figures is the German Connection. Many of the figures used by Britains for their early toys for example Don Quixote, the race horse and jockeys and the horse with the equestrienne are very similar to toy soldiers made in Germany, and much the same style was used for a number of Britains earliest toy soldiers. There is also a marked similarity, sometimes to the point of indistinguishability, between some of Britains early toys such as the Mandarin, and equivalent toys from Germany or sold in Germany. Several possibilities exist, for instance that Britains sourced parts and figures from Germany, that they copied toys and figures, or that the Germans copied Britains. The truth is currently lost in history.
