A GERMAN PARCEL-GILT TANKARD
Circa 1590, apparently unmarked, attributed to Hans II Ment, Augsburg
Tapering, on spreading foot, with flat moulded border, chased above with a band of shells, strapwork and fruit within scroll cartouches with cast narrow band of lobes and crosses in cartouches above, the gilded sides applied with six tapering rectangular silver panels of openwork scrolling foliage, four with applied gilt standing female figure, probably of Venus holding a mirror, the two panels either side of the handle with later trefoil, divided by a band of lobes and crosses, the cover with lobed and fluted border and with applied band of openwork scrolling foliage, the raised centre chased with masks and fruit in cartouches and with (probably replaced) cone finial rising from flutes, the thumbpiece formed as a seated female figure, possibly that of Judith with the head of Holofernes, the handle cast and chased as a female caryatid figure above a lion's mask
