This lot was acquired by Capt. C.W. Mainprise, a member of the medical corps on the Younghusband Expedition to Tibet in 1903-4, and thence by descent to the present owner. For an account of the Younghusband expedition, see P. Landon, Lhasa, An account of the country and people of Central Tibet and of the progress of the mission sent there by English Government in the year 1903-4, 1905; Mainprise is listed in appendix F, p. 366.
While the figure performs an usual gesture making an exact identification difficult, it relates very closely to another bronze at the Musée Guimet, with hands held slightly higher in a similar offering gesture, see G. Béguin, L'Inde et le monde Indianise au Musée national des Arts Asiatiques - Guimet, 1992, MG 17476, p. 127.
