The Royal Albert Bridge, was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859), to carry the Cornwall Railway line from Plymouth to Falmouth over the River Tamar between Devon and Cornwall at Saltash. The bridge was officially opened by His Royal Highness Prince Albert on Monday May 2nd 1859, and Thomas Tunstall was the driver of the inaugural train. Thousands of people from both sides of the river came to witness the event, but unfortunately Brunel was too ill to be able to attend. Curiously the stickpin was presented retrospectively to Mr Tunstall after the death of both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
