INDENT M.M. London Gazette 20.7.44
The recommendation states: "Lance Corporal William Arthur Wilson, The Gordon Highlanders, L/Cpl. Wilson was 2 i/c of his section when D Company, 1st Bn. London Scottish, attacked one of the last remaining strong points of the enemy SOUTH side of R. GARIGLIANO at 0500 hrs, on 21st January. His platoon was one of the assaulting platoons, and HAYBAG the objective having been captured with the loss, however, of many casualties, this NCO found himself the senior surviving member. He immediately set about re-organising the platoon and successfully reformed his command under the most difficult of circumstances, under heavy shell and mortar fire, and on being relieved shortly afterwards, according to pre-aranged plan, withdrew his platoon to the RV. The whole operation was carried out by L/Cpl Wilson with very great calm and distinction, and his powers of leadership were in no small way repsonsible for the safe consolidation of the objective and the eventual withdrawal of the platoon."
