Excavated under the auspices of Giuseppe Tucci in Swat and acquired by the present owner in the late 1950's.
Unusually stylized, this figure is important for its Karosthi inscription around the base, with only very few other examples known; compare another figure from Loriyan Tangai in D. Klimburg-Salter, Buddha in Indien, cat. no. 129, now at the Indian Museum Kalkutta; and an inscribed and dated Buddhist trinity from the Claude de Marteau Collection, in S. Czuma, Kushan Sculpture: Images from Early India, 1985, cat. no. 109.
