Lot Essay

Compare the treatment of the present figure's anatomy to the naturalistic musculature depicted in a serpentinite stair riser relief in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. no.13.96.21). These schematic figures are also portrayed holding oars and wearing acanthus leaves around their hips, suggesting that they are marine deities or boatmen.
