A Private Collection of Egyptian and Graeco-Roman antiquities
The collection was acquired by the present owner in London in the early 1970s. There is no reason to doubt that the Egyptian part of this collection was formed by George Anastase Michaelides (1900-1973) and legally exported from Egypt in the 1940s (personal communication from Peter Clayton). Michaelides was born in Cairo and, in the 1930s-1940s, acquired one of the finest collections of papyri, ostraca, bronzes, seals and scarabs, most of which are now in important museums. The collection, exported under licence, bore inventory numbers, some of which still survive on these objects, but to date no inventory has come to light.
