Lot Essay

It is quite rare to find such burlwood panel tops on huanghuali tables. The table design is illustrated in the fifteenth century version of Lu Ban Jing, and reproduced in the annotated edition by K. Ruitenbeek, Carpentry and Building in Late Imperial China, Leiden, 1996, Juan II, fig. 48.

Compare the zitan table with huamu panel top offered in these rooms in the sale of The Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Piccus Collection of Fine Classical Chinese Furniture, 18 September 1997, lot 78.
