This rug is one of a small group of Konya rugs of this design, two of which are in the Markarian Collection and subject to a considerable proportion of the introductory chapter to the catalogue by Walter Denny (Denny, Walter B. and Walker, Daniel (intro. by): The Markarian Album, nos. 6 and 7, pp. 40-46 and 86-89). Another is in the Ballard Collection (Catalogue of Oriental Rugs in the Collection of James F. Ballard, Indianapolis, 1924, no.44), while another was sold in these Rooms (27 April 1995, lot 438). The present example perfectly illustrates Denny's point when comparing the group to the earlier "Transylvanian" rugs; it is that bit closer to the original than the others. It shares the medallion with the others, but the field is considerably less cluttered, while all the other motifs are that bit closer to the prototype.
