The young woman represented in this dish, with her chequered dress and veil, closely resembles an example in the Louvre (inv.27780, Istanbul, Isfahan, Delhi. 3 Capitals of Islamic Art. Masterpieces from the Louvre Collection, Istanbul, 2008, no.93, pp.216-217). The figures in both the Louvre dish and ours are depicted carrying a pomegranate in their left hands. The pomegranate is a fruit often depicted because of its numerous symbolic associations. See lot 391 for a short discussion on the pomegranate.
