THE PROPERTY OF A LADY
(Lots 88 - 137)
The next fifty lots of Khmer and Thai sculptures in stone and bronze were collected by a German couple who worked as diplomats in Thailand and Cambodia during the 1950s and early 1960s. Some were reputedly given to them by King Bhumipol Adulyadej of Thailand and King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia, for services to their respective kingdoms. After returning to Germany in the mid-1960s, the couple retired to Spain in the early 1970s, constructing a superb mansion overlooking the Mediterranian to house their collection. Having outlived her husband by many years, the widow and co-owner passed away herself five years ago. Her heir has now decided to offer a large part of the collection for sale, in the hope that a new generation of collectors will enjoy these treasures as much as the previous owners did.
