This service probably made for the Reverend William Ashburnham, a Canon of St. Paul's and Bishop of Chichester, who succeeded to the baronetcy in 1762 and died in 1797. Another branch of the family included the 2nd Earl of Ashburnham, who held that title 1736 to 1812. See D.S. Howard, op. cit., vol. II, p. 527.
