A large Cairoware Qur'an box and cover, Syria, 19th century
Of square form, inlaid in silver, gold and brass with bands of verses from the Qur'an within raised stud borders, the cover panel with interlacing arabesques on foliate grounds around a central calligraphic roundel, the interior with wood lining carved in relief and inlaid in mother of pearl with further arabesques and Qur'anic incriptions -- 16¾in. (35cm.) wide.
