Mary Cathcart was Lord Cathcart's beautiful daughter who's portrait was painted four times by Gainsborough. In 1774 she married Thomas Graham (Later Lord Lynedoch). The couple lived abroad for some years on account of Mrs Grahams poor health, Mrs Graham died in Southern France in 1792. As Graham was bringing her body back to England for burial, the coffin was opened by Revolutionary officials in search of contraband. Appalled by this, Graham decided to devote his life to fighting the excesses of the French Revolution and so began a long and distinguished military career.
