A LARGE MING-STYLE BLUE AND WHITE MOON FLASK

The flattened body painted with an overall pattern of leafy foliate meander incorporating the bajixiang and centered on each side by a large blossom enclosing a shou character, bordered by a band of petal lappets above the foot and bands of ruyi heads and foliate scroll at the base of the slightly waisted neck painted on each side with a foliate spray and flanked by a pair of molded dragon scroll handles, all in tones of inky blue with pronounced 'heaping and piling' effect

Lot Essay

A number of large blue and white moon flasks of this type painted in the Ming style have been published including two with a Qianlong mark, one included in the exhibition, Splendour of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 9 June - 2 August 1992, Catalogue, no. 135 and another illustrated by Liu Liang-yu, Ch'ing Official and Popular Wares, Taipei, 1991, p. 176.
