Major Theodore Julian Bolland of Manchester, born 1870, educated at Uppingham, entered the Manchester Regiment as 2nd Lieutenant from the Militia, 1892, later transferred to the 16th Rajputs, Indian Army and retired at Lieutenant, 1902. On the outbreak of the Great War was commissioned Captain 9th London Regiment and later advanced to Temporary Major in the 9th Liverpool Regiment, March 1915. He proceeded to France with his Bn. and on 9 May during the Second Battle of Ypres, they were sent to the front line trenches for the first time under fire - Major Bolland was everywhere encouraging his men and, proceeding down the trench searching out the disposition of his Bn. It is believed that he noticed a K.R.R.C. man lying wounded just over the parapet - he went to his aid and was killed attempting to rescue him.
