Chairs of this type were made to be used in the gardens of gentry households and were made as part of a repertoire of garden furniture which included hooded garden alcoves and rustic furiture made from branches. Such chairs were painted with blue/green paint to protect them from the elements, but because of their outdoor use, the great majority have decayed and been lost. This is a rare survivor of that period. One similar chair is held in the Geffrye Museum's Cotton Collection of chairs.
