Lot Essay
The cast foliate scroll panels of this box were inspired by a famous gold casket (now in the Louvre) that was possibly offered to Anne of Austria by Cardinal Mazarin circa 1645. Though the maker of that box remains unknown, it was most likely executed by a Parisian goldsmith and also had panels mounted onto a silk-covered wooden carcass. That box was rediscovered in the Tuileries Palace during the Restauration and entered the Louvre collections under the Second Empire (see Louvre, Les Objets d'art, 1993, pp. 164-65.
